Prepare for a window or door comparison

Before exploring products, write down which openings are part of the project and whether the work concerns new construction or replacement. If practical, measure each opening and note any details that may affect the choice, such as the direction a window should open or whether a door connects to an outdoor area. Measurements are useful starting points, but a qualified project assessment may still be needed to determine the correct product size.

Choose by opening and use

Different window types serve different layouts and preferences. For example, a hinged window and a sliding window operate differently, while a picture window is a fixed-style option. Think about access, ventilation needs, and the view from the opening before narrowing the selection. For doors, consider how people move through the space and whether a patio or terrace door is relevant.

Bring clear preferences to the project discussion

Standard and custom sizes, along with choices in shape, color, glass, and trim, can affect the final look and fit of a product. A useful preparation step is to separate must-haves from preferences: record required dimensions or functional needs first, then list appearance choices. Photos of the building and the surrounding finishes can help keep those preferences organized when comparing options.
